Opening a US bank account for non-residents is not one question but five: the answer changes by country. A US LLC does not just make you look professional. It unlocks the payment and banking platforms that block your home country outright. This page shows exactly which platforms you can use from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, the UAE, and the Philippines — directly, and through a US LLC. Every row is checked against each provider’s own policy.

Banking: which US business account you can actually open
Most non-residents assume any US fintech will take them once the LLC exists. That is not true. Two of the popular options block entire countries, and one needs a document most non-residents do not have. Here is the honest picture.

What each banking option really means
Mercury. You need your EIN, a passport, and your formation documents. Mercury prohibits founders based in Pakistan, Nigeria, the Philippines, Nepal, and Bangladesh (per Mercury’s prohibited-countries policy, confirmed 31 May 2026). India and UAE founders may apply under standard KYC. One detail competitors miss: Mercury still blocks Nigeria and the Philippines even after the FATF removed both from its grey list in 2025. Mercury does not follow FATF automatically. Approvals also tightened through 2025. A brand-new LLC with no revenue is sometimes rejected, so apply with a clear business description. Nigeria’s country-level ban has been in effect since August 2024.
Founders living in Nepal or Bangladesh: see what works for getting paid from Nepal, whether Stripe is available in Nepal and forming a US LLC from Bangladesh, both checked September 2026.
Wise Business. This is your main account when Mercury blocks your country. Wise accepts founders from all five markets, subject to KYC review — with one condition that matters for Pakistan and the UAE: Wise does not issue USD account details to accounts with addresses in those countries, so your business profile must carry the LLC’s US address throughout. You need an active LLC and a verified EIN. Wise may ask for a CP575 letter, a 147C letter, or an IRS-stamped SS-4. The EIN number alone is often not enough. The one-time fee for US account and routing numbers is about $31, with no monthly fee. Wise is not a bank and is not FDIC-insured, so move large balances to your home bank. See our full Wise Business setup guide for a US LLC.
Relay. This is the hardest option for non-residents. Relay’s document requirements (updated 11 August 2026) ask every beneficial owner for a passport, an SSN or passport number, and a physical US address (no PO boxes or virtual mailboxes), and expect the business to have an operating presence in the US. An ITIN is not what blocks most applicants; the US address requirement is. Relay also cannot open accounts for owners with citizenship or residency in Pakistan or Nigeria, among other countries. (Relay details re-checked 17 September 2026.)
Payoneer. This is a receiving account, not a bank account. It works in all five markets. You collect USD, EUR, or GBP, then withdraw to your local bank. You cannot hold a balance inside India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh — the money must be withdrawn. The FX markup is about 2%, higher than Wise at roughly 0.5%. Use it for marketplace payouts like Amazon, Upwork, and Fiverr, not as your main account.
Payment processors: Stripe and PayPal by country
This is the real reason most founders form a US LLC. Your home country decides your native access. A US LLC removes that limit almost entirely.
| Your country | Stripe (native) | Stripe (via US LLC) | PayPal Business (via LLC) |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | ⚠️ Limited — invite-only | ✅ Yes — full USD | ✅ Yes — via linked US bank |
| Pakistan | ❌ No — not supported | ✅ Yes — full USD | ✅ Yes — via linked US bank |
| Nigeria | ⚠️ Limited — Naira via Paystack | ✅ Yes — full USD | ✅ Yes — via linked US bank |
| UAE | ✅ Yes — supported | ✅ Yes — full USD | ✅ Yes — via linked US bank |
| Philippines | ❌ No — not supported | ✅ Yes — full USD | ✅ Yes — via linked US bank |
| Vietnam | ❌ No — not supported | ✅ Yes — full USD | ✅ Yes — via linked US bank |
| Indonesia | ⚠️ Preview only — ask Stripe first | ✅ Yes — full USD | ✅ Yes — via linked US bank |
| Brazil | ✅ Yes — supported | ✅ Yes — full USD | ✅ Yes — via linked US bank |
| Turkey | ❌ No — not supported | ✅ Yes — full USD | ✅ Yes — via linked US bank (PayPal has had no Turkish operation since June 2016) |
Stripe and PayPal, the honest version
Stripe. Stripe decides eligibility by the country where the business is registered, so a US LLC with an EIN, a US bank account and a US business address can apply for US Stripe. Stripe also asks for details about the person who owns or runs the account. Enter your own details accurately; don’t put an agent’s address in place of your personal one. Stripe’s list of supported countries (checked 17 September 2026) includes the UAE and India, lists Nigeria as part of its extended network, and doesn’t include Pakistan or the Philippines. Compare the two processors in our payment processors guide for US LLCs.
PayPal. You open PayPal Business for the LLC with its EIN. PayPal’s help pages don’t say whether it also accepts an owner’s ITIN; for a single-member LLC they ask for the owner’s taxpayer number, and non-US tax residents complete a Form W-8 instead. You must link a US bank first, such as Mercury or Wise. Your country decides how you withdraw, not whether you can open the account. Full setup takes about 2 to 6 weeks, and most of that is the EIN wait. See the step-by-step in our PayPal for a US LLC without an SSN guide.
The stack we recommend, by country
India. Mercury, plus Wise, plus full Stripe and PayPal through the LLC. Both Mercury and Wise accept Indian founders, so banking is straightforward. Start with forming your US LLC from India.
Pakistan. Wise as your main account, plus Stripe and PayPal through the LLC. Mercury is closed to Pakistan. Stripe doesn’t support Pakistan-registered businesses, so a US LLC is the usual route to card payments. See how to form a US LLC from Pakistan.
Nigeria. Wise, plus full USD Stripe through the LLC. Mercury is closed to Nigeria. Native Stripe only pays out in Naira through Paystack, which limits USD business. See how to form a US LLC from Nigeria.
UAE. Mercury, plus Wise, plus Stripe. UAE founders already have decent access — the same banking options as India — but the LLC removes Stripe’s feature limits and gives clean USD banking. Read our LLC formation overview to start.
Philippines. First check whether you need a US company at all: PayPal lets you withdraw to Philippine banks and GCash, and Amazon pays sellers in pesos. If you need Stripe, which doesn’t support the Philippines, a US LLC with Wise as the main account is the usual route. Mercury is closed to Philippine residents. Our guide to forming a US LLC from the Philippines walks through who actually needs one. Compare your options on our US bank account hub.
Still deciding where to register? Your state choice does not change Stripe, Mercury, or Wise eligibility — those depend on your country, not Wyoming versus Delaware. See our best states to file an LLC guide for the cost math.
The 30-second answer
If you are a non-US founder selling digital services, software, ecommerce products, or freelance work, the most important distinction is between receiving money and accepting card payments directly.
| Need | Usually solved by |
|---|---|
| Receive bank transfers | Wise / Payoneer / US bank |
| Accept Visa/Mastercard payments | Stripe (supported-country business) |
| Hold USD and send wires | US business bank account |
| Invoice international clients | Wise / bank account / Stripe |
A US LLC works because your business becomes US-registered — the provider’s supported-country rules then apply to the LLC, not your passport. Approval still depends on the provider’s own compliance review.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Stripe without a US LLC in Pakistan or the Philippines?
No. Stripe doesn’t support businesses registered in Pakistan or the Philippines. A US LLC with an EIN and a US bank account is the usual route to Stripe.
Which US bank works if Mercury rejects my country?
Wise Business. It accepts founders from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, the UAE, and the Philippines, subject to KYC. You need an active LLC and a verified EIN.
Does PayPal accept an ITIN?
PayPal Business is opened for the LLC with its EIN. PayPal doesn’t publish whether it also accepts an owner’s ITIN; non-US tax residents complete a Form W-8. Link a US bank such as Wise (or Mercury, if your country is eligible) before you apply.
Is Payoneer a US bank account?
No. Payoneer is a receiving account for marketplace and B2B payments. You cannot hold a balance in India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh, and it is not FDIC-insured.
How long until my payment stack works?
Plan for 2 to 6 weeks from formation. Most of the wait is the EIN, which takes about 4 business days by fax or up to 4 weeks by mail for non-residents.
